New Years - Southern Tradition

Sticking to our "Southern roots", we always honor the new years dinner tradition for luck in the new year...that is collards for money and black-eyed peas for luck! No one really likes either one, but it is something we always do and it's actually kind of fun to watch the kids squirm and make faces...they do eat it because we don't want to be penny-less or out of luck! :) It's all in good fun! The kids helped cook and we always through in a couple of favorites to off-set the "must-haves". (Usually it's BBQ pork and mac and cheese and lets not forget Austin's favorite rolls!) Anna asked the blessing on the food..."Thank you God for this wonderful day you have gaven us. But, I don't really like these white peas with the black on them." Amen. Jeffery and I couldn't help but to crack up. She ate them, but she PEELED the skin off of every pea! (She actually liked the collards and Connor said I did a good job cooking those.) The peas were the least favorite of all...these were frozen...the collards were fresh...next year I'm buying fresh peas...we'll see if that makes any difference! Jeffery isn't a fan of this traditional meal either, but he never misses it...he just covers up the peas and collards with anything from grape jelly (major YUCK) to BBQ sauce! HA! They moan and groan, but New Years would not be the same without this time-honored southern tradition.
